Deer Hunting Do’s and Don’ts
As deer hunting season approaches it is time to review our checlist of hunting do’s and don’ts. Some of the items are common sense and some will make you say ‘hmmm I never thought of that!’ Click the link to hear the complete audio tips list!
First, and most important is to check your weapons before the season begins. Make sure your guns are cleaned properly and possibly purchase new ammunition.
If you are a bow hunter check your bow and obtain new arrows. It is also a good idea to check your scope and test fire the weapons as well.
Next, make sure you have the proper orange clothing/vests so you are not mistaken for wildlife.
Every year we hear horror stories about hunters who are badly injured or even killed because they were not wearing their orange vests or jackets. Don’t worry, the deer can’t see the bright orange like we do because they are truly color blind.
One quick reminder, while we are talking about your safety vest, don’t walk into the hunting area without your vest. Put it on immediately when you step out of your vehicle. Better yet have it on when you get to the area.
The third safety tip is to keep your weapon UNLOADED when transporting it, even if you are going down the road to a different hunting area.
A legal hunting license is also a must have. The fees keep the NRA running as well as helping to maintain the game reserves. You don’t want to ignore this folks. The fine and legal fees are massive if you get caught without one. It is simply not worth it!
Here is something you may not know about deer hunting…
Do not put on any shades of blue in the hunting area. Even though deer are color blind they do have a sensitivity to ultraviolet blue color. They see blue as being a bright blue haze and will avoid anything in that area at all costs.
A simple thing to remember is to take plenty of water with you. You may be hunting for a number of hours and you are going to get thirsty. It is easy to get dehydrated no matter what the temperature. So take some breaks along the way to stay hydrated.
I hate to mention this, but speaking of drinking, don’t drink liqueur while on the hunt! There is plenty of time later to celebrate and have fun. Liqueur makes hunting very dangerous not only for you but also for your fellow hunters. Just don’t do it!
Do not use illegal techniques to draw the in deer. Comply with the guidelines and be a good example for others.
Common courtesy dictates that you pick up your trash when you are in the woods. It is so frustrating for me to be continually discovering beer cans, cigarette packs along with other assorted items of garbage in an otherwise beautiful wooded area. Whatever you take in with you should be disposed of in a trash can outside of the hunting area.
Most people are aware of this but let me say it anyway. Do not smoke in the woods. In addition to the fire danger it will also greatly reduce your success on the hunting trip. The deer can smell it and will head in the other direction!
